Immigration and ResidencyEntering the BahamasThe Bahamas does require visas from citizens of the USA, United Kingdom, or Canada. Visitors may stay in The Bahamas for up to 8 months at a time, but must have a return ticket out of the Bahamas and must show a means of financial support for this period. To live, work or engage in business requires a permit issued by the Bahamas Immigration Department. Living in the BahamasAnnual Residency Applicants for annual residency must provide evidence of financial support. The cost is $1,000 per household, plus $25 for each dependent. Permanent Residency Applicants for permanent residency must be of good character, show evidence of financial support, and give a written statement of their desire to permanently reside in the Bahamas. Accelerated consideration for such status is granted to those with a minimum property investment of $500,000. Spouses and dependent children (under age 18) usually residing within the household can be endorsed on the certificate, subject to conditions set by made by the Immigration Board. Cost of Permanent Residence is $10,000 before issuance, with endorsements free. Those who held permanent residency status before the Immigration Act (1975) automatically retain the status. Spouses of Bahamian citizens can obtain a Certificate of Permanent Residence with the right to work at any time for women and after five years of marriage for men. Home Owners Resident Card Foreign investors may acquire residential property in The Bahamas of up to five acres without government approval. These acquisitions must be registered in accordance with the International Persons Landholding Act. Home owners are entitled to apply for an annual "Home Owners Resident Card". At a cost of $500 per year, this card permits the holder, spouse and minor children to enter the Bahamas and remain for as long as the card is valid. Application may be made to the Director of Immigration.
